Our Story

Ludgershall Sports & Social Club has its roots in the local football community and has developed over more than a century into one of the town's main sporting and social venues.

1900 – The beginning

• In 1900, Ludgershall Sports FC was registered with the Football Association. In 2000, the FA awarded the club a Centenary Certificate marking 100 years of continuous membership.

• In its earliest years there was no clubhouse. Players and organisers are believed to have met in local pubs to select teams and organise matches.

After the First World War

• Following World War I, the club merged with another local football team, reflecting the impact the war had on the area's population.

• During the 1920s and early 1930s, matches were played on Berry's Field, behind what is now the Co-op area in Ludgershall.

• Team selection often took place in the back room of the Prince of Wales Hotel, with younger players waiting outside to hear whether they had been picked.

Building a permanent home

• Before a permanent clubhouse existed, the club rented several premises around the town, both of which were eventually destroyed by fire.

• During the late 1920s and early 1930s, the club enjoyed considerable success in the Salisbury Leagues and the Wiltshire Cup.

• Around this time the club purchased land at what is now Astor Crescent for football and cricket, establishing the site that remains the club's home today.

The first clubhouse

Just before the Second World War:

• Additional land became available beside the sports field.

• The first purpose-built clubhouse was constructed.

• It included:

  • a main bar,

  • a separate ladies' room,

  • two snooker tables.

• The club became affiliated with the Club and Institute Union (CIU) and was officially known as Ludgershall Sports Working Men's Club. A full-time steward was appointed and the club developed close links with the local brewery H. & G. Simonds.

World War II

Because Ludgershall was close to major military camps on Salisbury Plain, the club became an important social centre for:

• British servicemen,

• overseas troops,

• local residents.

Many servicemen who used the club settled in the area after the war, marrying into local families and becoming part of the community.

Post-war expansion

After 1945 the club expanded significantly:

• football and cricket continued to thrive,

• indoor sports such as snooker, darts, bar billiards and crib became increasingly popular,

• the club competed successfully in the regional Border League for working men's clubs.

Modernisation

During the late 1960s:

• neighbouring land was purchased,

• a dance hall was added,

• facilities were expanded to meet growing demand.

Further redevelopment followed:

• internal remodelling,

• refurbishment during the 1990s,

• improvements to sporting facilities and member amenities.

The 21st century

Facing changing economic conditions, the club adapted by:

• modernising its management,

• investing in facilities,

• developing the Paddock Suite, a function room used for weddings, parties and community events,

• upgrading sports changing rooms.

To finance these improvements, part of the football ground was sold for development—a significant but strategic decision aimed at ensuring the club's long-term future.

The club remains:

• a members' club affiliated with the CIU,

• home to football and darts teams,

• a venue for quizzes, bingo, live entertainment, charity events and community celebrations,

• an important social hub for Ludgershall and the surrounding area.

Connection with Ludgershall Sports FC

The sports club and the football club have been closely linked throughout their history. The football club became formally associated with the Sports & Social Club after moving to Astor Crescent in the 1930s. Although Ludgershall Sports F.C. ceased operating in 2024 after a remarkable 124-year history, the Sports & Social Club continues to serve the community from the same site.
